1856년 1월 12일 이탈리아 토스카나주 피렌체에서 출생.
개인미술교육을 받았음.
어려서부터 이탈리아, 프랑스, 독일 등 여러 나라를 여행.
1874년 봄 가족과 함께 파리로 이주.
1880∼82년까지 베네치아에서 거리풍경과 민속놀이를 중심소재로 작품활동.
1886년 영국으로 건너가 작품활동.
1889년 미국으로 귀국. 보스턴공립도서관 벽화작업 등 활발한 활동.
1925년 4월 14일 영국 런던에서 사망.
