프랑스 신고전주의 대표화가.
1748년 8월 30일 파리에서 상인의 아들로 출생.
18세 때 왕립 회화, 조각 아카데미에 입학.
1774년 로마상 수상.
1775년 로마 유학.
1879년 프랑스혁명 당시 혁명정부 미술집정관.
역사화를 많이 그림.
나폴레옹 1세 시절 궁정화가.
나폴레옹 몰락 후 벨기에 브뤼셀로 망명.
베네치아적인 색채를 사용하여 앙피르양식을 발전시킴.
